Who We Are

The Louis Edem Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming the lives of young athletes through sports, education, and empowerment. We believe that basketball is more than a game — it’s a vehicle for building discipline, unlocking potential, and creating opportunities that last a lifetime.

Founded by Louis Edem Ekpenyong — a Nigerian-American former professional basketball player and IT engineer based in Maryland, USA — the foundation was born out of a simple but powerful conviction: give back to the community that gave you everything.

After retiring from professional basketball and building a successful career in information technology, Louis Edem turned his focus to the youth of Nigeria and West Africa. What started as a passion project has grown into one of the most recognized grassroots sports and youth empowerment organizations in the region.

Our Mission

To create sustainable opportunities for young athletes by combining competitive sports with academic support, mentorship, and life skills development — so that every athlete has a real chance to succeed both on and off the court.

Our Vision

A West Africa where every young athlete — regardless of background — has access to education, mentorship, and the opportunity to build a meaningful life.

What Drives Us

Across West Africa, millions of young people have talent, energy, and ambition — but limited access to the platforms, resources, and mentorship they need to turn that potential into a future. We exist to close that gap.

We do this through basketball championships that create exposure, scholarship programs that remove financial barriers to education, IT bootcamps that build digital skills, and mentorship programs that shape character and leadership.

Every program we run is designed with one question in mind: does this create a lasting impact in a young person’s life?

Our Programs & Projects

🏀 Women's West Africa Basketball Championship 2026

Our flagship women’s tournament brings together top female basketball clubs and athletes from Nigeria, Ghana, Benin Republic, Togo, and across West Africa. The championship promotes women’s participation in sports, creates international exposure for athletes, attracts scouts and sponsors, and drives economic activity in host communities. Covered by major media including Channels Television.

🏕️ Women's Under-18 Basketball Camp — Jos, Plateau State

In January 2026, we organized an elite development camp for young female athletes in Jos, Northern Nigeria. Participants received basketball training, mentorship, leadership workshops, and personal development sessions. Four outstanding athletes walked away with full academic scholarships from the foundation.

🏆 Louis Edem International Basketball Tournament

Now in its 5th edition, this annual tournament features top clubs from Nigeria, Ghana, and Benin Republic — including Rivers Hoopers, Kwara Falcons, Spintex Knights, and ASPAC Basketball Club. It has grown into one of the most recognized basketball competitions in West Africa, providing a professional platform for player scouting, media coverage, and cross-border sports collaboration.

🎓 Academic Scholarship Support Program

We consistently award academic scholarships to talented young athletes, ensuring that the pursuit of basketball never comes at the cost of education. These scholarships reduce financial barriers, reward academic effort, and support long-term youth development.

🌱 Grassroots Basketball Development Initiative

Since 2023, we have committed to long-term investment in grassroots basketball across Nigeria and West Africa — through tournaments, talent discovery camps, coaching, and mentorship. Our goal is simple: find talent where it exists, and give it a stage.

👩‍🏀 Women's Basketball Advancement Project

We introduced dedicated initiatives to strengthen women’s basketball competitions in Nigeria and West Africa — including women-focused tournaments and play-in formats that increase visibility, expand competitive opportunities, and push for greater inclusion in the sport.

💡 Youth Empowerment IT Bootcamp

An intensive training program that equips young people with digital skills, real-world project experience, and entrepreneurial thinking. Led by experienced professionals, the bootcamp goes beyond coding — it builds problem-solvers and future-ready professionals.

🤝 Youth Empowerment Through Sports Initiative

Basketball is our platform, but empowerment is our product. Through this initiative, we use sports as a tool for leadership development, mentorship, social transformation, and career guidance — addressing youth unemployment and limited opportunities one athlete at a time.
